September 11th, 1992 Harley Quinn made her first appearance in Batman the Animated Series (BTAS). She was created by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini as a henchwoman for the Joker, and because fans loved her so much she appeared in more episodes of BTAS and started getting her own comics!
The biggest staple in her early career was Mad Love- an episode of BTAS where we learn about her background as a psychiatrist and how she became Harley Quinn from Dr. Harleen Quinzel.
I have an entire podcast talking about Mad Love so please give it a listen here: https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-wraig-10cdf63
I have been a lifelong Harley Quinn fan. I grew up watching BTAS and reading her comics. She is so much more than a character to me- she encouraged me to leave an abusive relationship, she pushes me in my studies, she encourages me when i feel like the weight of the world is falling on me, and she helps me to be the best version of myself that I can.
I have 29 years of thanks, love, and gratitude for the creation of Harley Quinn and I live everyday to make her proud. Words cannot even express what she has given me. The courage, fire in my soul, pushing through pain and fear, and always getting up when I'm knocked down is because I believe ‘if Harley can do it, I can do it.’
So happy birthday Harley Quinn! I hope you are all celebrating our clown princess of crime!
